John was known to many in the sailing community based at La Roche Bernard (LRB)on the Vilaine South Brittany where he and hsi wife Sheila kept MISTY WIGHT their Westerly Pageant for the last 8 years.
John started sailing a Mirror Dinghy in the 60's and was a past commodore of West Oxfordshire sailing club.
On retirement in 1987 they crusied extensively to the West country from bases of Chichester, Fareham and Quay Lane with their cat Pan.
Following a trip through the Brittany canals to the Morbihan they discovered LRB and returned the following year to make it Misty Wights home port.
Based there they cruised as far as La Rochelle and became regular visitors to the Morbihan. Their favourite destination was Sauzon on Belle Isle where they would dry out on their twin keels for a couple of weeks. Spending five months a year living aboard adjacent to the quay in the vieux port they became well known and made many good freinds amongst the local sailing community, who provided John and his wife Sheila with care and support as illness and infirmity restricted their cruising. He was thrilled that so many attended his 80th birthday party in July 2007
John was active in many professional and charitable organisations he was a former churchwarden in Burford his home town. He was a long time RNLI supporter and his family requested funeral and remembrance donations be made to the RNLI.
Sheila and his son Michael will be visitng LRB at the end of July.
