The RNLI saves lives at sea.

Ian Sellars

A memorial service is to be held for Ian Sellars, the owner and managing director of Droylsden-based Elcometer Ltd, who led the company to achieve a long list of world firsts.

Sellars died in his sleep on a plane flying from India to Singapore while on a business trip two weeks ago.

Aged 69, he had led Elcometer for 46 years and has seen the number of employees grow from seven to 200.

He began work in a 370 sq ft office but the company now has six offices and a global network of 150 distributors.

Elcometer makes inspection equipment which measures the thickness of paint and Sellars was regarded internationally as one of the founders of the modern coating inspection industry.

The company’s ten world beating products range from the world’s first electronic coating thickness gauge in 1963 to the world’s first digital surface profile gauge with memory and Bluetooth in 2007. It has also won the Queen's Award for Export and a Queen's Award for Technical Innovation.

A tribute on the company’s website says: “Ian Sellars’ earliest memory of the coatings industry was at the age of nine, watching his father make the first manufacturing tool used in the manufacture of the very first gauge that bore this famous company name, the Elcometer 101.”

Sellars was the the sixth generation of his family to run the company and began his working life on the shop floor helping to assemble valves.

Hundreds of colleagues, customers and business contacts are expected at the service, which will be held at 2pm on May 7 at St Wilfred's Church in Mobberley.
