Peter Chapman
28.2.1935 – 8.7.2009
Peter was born in Harrogate, the only child of Elizabeth and John Chapman. He attended Ripon Grammar School, which is where something that you might call a life-changing moment occurred. For it was here, that Peter joined the school sailing club that was led by the geography master.
The following is a quote from The Riponian (School magazine December 1946)
Sailing Club
Some surprise and, no doubt, some amusement will be shown on reading of a Sailing Club at this school with its adverse geographical position – the nearest part of the coast being forty miles away!
The theoretical knowledge gained during the winter months is to be put into practice at Easter when a cruise on the Broads is being organised.
Peter went on one of these sailing holidays on the Norfolk Broads. Later, he went back as a supposed “expert “, taking his father and his father’s friend with him (and they couldn’t swim)
After graduating at Reading University in 1957, Peter worked as a microbiologist in the food industry. Later in his life,Peter spent many holidays sailing on the Norfolk Broads. In 1983 he became a member of Staunton Harold Sailing Club. The sight of him sailing his Mirror dinghy was a familiar one to all other sailors. He also contributed a tremendous amount to the Committee as Treasurer and managing the bar. He played an active part in the club until just before his death.
Peter had been an avid supporter of the RNLI during his life time. It therefore seems appropriate to set up a Forever by the Sea Fund in his memory. Peter is survived by his second wife, Junette and a daughter, Susan , from his previous marriage. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
