The RNLI saves lives at sea.

Ian Henderson died suddenly at home on 27th July 2009, aged 87 years. Dearly beloved husband of the late Joan, loving dad of Alan and Barbara, a devoted granddad to Steven, Chris and Tom and father-in-law to Rosanna and Philip. His father, Chief Engineer of SS Cheldale, was tragically lost at sea in 1940 off the coast of Durban South Africa and whilst Ian was not a seaman himself, the sea and ships were in his blood. As a boy he accompanied his father on his ship from Swansea to the Tyne in the 30's, helped his cousin with catering on ships trials (in the days when ships were still built at Blyth in the 50's and 60's), sailed on many mini-cruises from the Tyne to Norway in the 70's and on cruising holidays with his wife Joan to the "land of the midnight sun" and around the Canary Islands in the 80's. In 1993 he was one of only 7 passengers on a Geest Line ship to the Windward Islands. He was always a strong supporter of RNLI and donations in lieu of funeral flowers have been collected. He'll be sadly missed by his family, former work colleagues and friends. Alan Henderson
