The RNLI saves lives at sea.

This dedication is for Patience Ramsden, who died 29th August 2006. Whilst Mother was born and lived all 90 years of her life in Runcorn, Cheshire, her family originated from Scarborough. Her parents and her paternal grandparents move to Runcorn during WW1 after their home had been damaged as a result of naval bombardment. It is these roots in Scarborough that I believe lead to her interest in and support of the RNLI, in that her maternal grandfather was a skipper on a trawler working out of Scarborough.

However it must be said, Mother did not inherit his love of the sea, although she did enjoy a cruise with my Father in 1972, other than that occasion she would opt for any travel other than a boat! In fact, although she once took a trip on Concorde, her favourite mode of transport was the train, the Northern Belle in particular, enjoying both the grandeur and the food. She usually went twice a year, a day out in Spring/Summer and always Christmas lunch. Having gone on these trips for so many years, the staff would recognise her and she received extra special treatment from them. Those trips were definitely the highlight of the year for her.

Sadly, Mother had been widowed at the age of 58 after 35 years of marriage to my Father, and she missed him greatly until the day she died. It was through her strength of character and determination that she continued to do things with her life. In addition to her trips on the Northern Belle, she also enjoyed the company of friends, was an avid reader, in particular murder and mystery books. She regularly attended church and took part in various church activities and outings, including trips to the theatre. Although she became rather frail in her last years this did not stop her trying to keep active. Apart from her last six months, she retained her independence, was very alert mentally, did her own cooking, housework, shopping and even gardening.

In summary, a remarkable woman, missed by both family and friends.
