Sadly Des passed away on 3rd July 2007 aged 83. Des was born 12th January 1924 in Withington Manchester. He lived with his parents in the Fallowfield area and was evacuated to Blackpool when the 2nd World War broke out.

In 1941 he joined the Royal Navy. He had such exceptional eyesight he was encouraged to become a signalman and served on the aircraft carrier Indomitable in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Indian Ocean and Pacific. Early in the campaign his ship was torpedoed in the Mediterranean but managed to limp to Gibraltar and then to America to be repaired.

He was aboard Indomitable when it entered Hong Kong to take the Japanese surrender.

After the war he volunteered to go to Singapore to bring back those who had suffered at the hands of the Japanese in prisoner of war camps.

Des married Joan in 1948 and has two children.

Des had a long career in the Civil Service becoming a manager in the DHSS. He spent many happy years working in the Special Investigation Branch in Salford and finally retired aged 60 from the Macclesfield office.

In his leisure time he took up many hobbies firstly railway modelling and later photography. From the mid sixties to the time of his stroke in 2002 most of his hobby time was dedicated to photography. He became a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society.

Des is known for his skills and crafts. He carried out his hobbies with a passion. He was also known for his sense of humour and mischievous nature.

Des was an inshore member of the RNLI and cherished his years in the Navy greatly.
