Rene and I first met in May 1940, waiting with others for the cinema to open. We promised to meet three days later at 7pm at the bus station. I was still waiting at 8pm when I noticed a large army convoy going through Maidstone. The buses were held up but soon after 8pm Rene turned up. We went for a walk and made sure we were able to get in touch in the future.

We were married on the 14th November 1942; I was demobbed in May 1946 and went back to my homeland – the west coast of Wales, but returned to Maidstone in August 1950 with two lovely precious daughters. The years have proved we made the perfect choice. We were, and always have been, a proud family, and Rene was proud of her home, and also loved gardening, especially roses. I have a rose called “Irene” in the garden in her memory. Rene was a home loving person, always friendly and loved a chat with all our friends and neighbours, loved and was loved.
The donations to the RAFBF fund in her memory came to £670.00 and I have good reason to thank my god for his blessing for our happy life and times. We were able to celebrate 70 years together on 14th November 2012.
