Mr Robert Ernest Webb (by Pat Holmes & Irene Taylor, daughters)

It was Dad’s boyhood ambition to join the RAF, partly influenced by the fact that his father had been in the RFC. Dad duly became a boy entrant (No.550472) at Cranwell in the September of 1935. He passed out as a Wireless Operator in Christmas 1936.

The 2nd World War saw him in many parts of England but also North Africa and Gibralter and he rose to the rank of Flight Sergeant. He retired from the RAF in the early 1950’s for family reasons but he maintained a keen interest in it throughout the rest of his life. He was a member of the Blenheim Society and also the RAF Hemswell Association.

When his grandson, Mark, moved to Elvington in North Yorkshire, Dad was thrilled to be taken to its Air Museum in the summer of 2004. He was proud to show Mark where he had sat in the plane and recount his considerable knowledge of aircraft and wartime memories.

Dad loved to reminisce about his activities in the RAF and often with amusing anecdotes of what he and his pals got up to. He saw it as an extended loving family of which he was proud and happy to be a member. He was a quiet and unassuming man but he certainly lived up to the RAF Hemswell association motto of ‘Bold and Tenacious’ throughout all areas of his life.

Dad passed away peacefully on February 12th 2012 at the age of 92 year and the monies collected at his funeral service were donated to the RAFBF in his memory.

May he rest in perfect peace.
