Sadly, Derek F Roberts passed away on 4th April 2011.

Derek was called up in 1941 and trained to be a Bomb Aimer in South Africa. In 1943 he flew Halifax aircraft on bombing missions over Germany (Dusseldorf and Essen) until he was "shot up" over Dusseldorf later that year. He was mentioned in Despatches, we believe, as a result of an act of bravery involving a Rear-Gunner colleague who was seriously injured in that incident.

He saw further action in 1945 by way of a second tour, this time with 100 Special Duties flying Lysanders, before returning to his employment with Midland Bank in 1946.
