He was the ony member of his family to attend St Edwards College, a Grammar school .He joined the RAF to do National Service having abandoned his plans to go to university to study French and History and was trained as a Russian linguist as this was at the height of the Cold War . He left at the end of his National Service commitment but found the civvy street employment situation difficult and was by now married with 2 small children so rejoined in his old trade and made it his career. He played many a game of football for the messes ,units and stations with which he was based and later on managed teams. He served at many Signals units at home and abroad including Vienna , Berlin and Cyprus . He also taught for a number or years at the Joint Services School of Languages and North Luffenham. He died suddenly on 26th July 1978 at RAF Gatow at the age of 44 years having served for 24 years. Sadly his death came as he was planning a second career to study Law and do solicitor's articles. He was survived by his wife Maureen , Son John and daughters Carol, Nicola and Jacqueline . Carol died in 2005 and Maureen in 2010.
