Husband to Pat ,Father to Steven,Richard and Amanda
Born in Biddulph Staffs. ,attended Hanley High School and North Staffs. Technical College ,before signing up for the Royal Air Force 1941. After lengthy training in Radio and Radar joined up with A.M.E.S 15051 ,combined Operations Mobile Radar Units . Sgt. "Lofty" Downes saw service in the Mediterranean and European theatres of war .
On returning to civilian life he trained in the teaching profession at Westminster Training College 1947- 1949. Following this he held various teaching posts in the U.K. before emigrating to Canada with his Wife Pat, and sons Steven and Richard in 1956.
Continuing on with his teaching career in Belleville. Ontario ,and obtaining a further degree in Child Psychology.He remained in Canada until 1962 ,returning to the U.K.with his family, where he set up home in Weston-super-Mare,where their daughter Amanda was born.
His career in teaching continued,culminating in a Headship at Wells Central Junior School,Wells,Somerset ,where he remained until his retirement in 1990.
Grandchildren and beekeeping took up a large part of his retirement, and following the loss of his Wife Pat in 2000 he devoted a lot of his time to writing his memoirs, also a illustrated account of his time in the R.A.F., this was undoubtably his proudest achievement in his final years,and will live on in the memory of family and friends in his blogg:- " Loftys Radar " on You Tube.
