Leslie Collins (Les) 30.7.1918 – 30.6.2010

Lifetime Member of RAFA.

Enlisted in RAF 21/11/38 as RAF Medical (627165). Went with British Expeditionary Force to France 10/10/39 and evacuated from Dunkirk 17/6/40. LAC 19/8/40 made to Corporal 22/1/41, trained as Rear Gunner and promoted to Sergeant 13/9/41. Remustered from Air Gunner to Nursing Orderley 13/1/42. Returned to France on D-Day (10/6/44) landing on the Beach near Tilly-Su-Seulle then onto Belgium (124 Wing – Typhoons), Holland and then to Lubeck in Germany where he was in charge of No 1 Field Hospital, returning 11/12/46 to West Malling. Served with 417 Sqdn Fighter Command , Tain in Scotland (Spitfires), 164 Sqdn (Spitfires), 3034 Servicing Echelon (Hurricanes), 653 AOP Sqdn (Austers) and finally at HQ 47 Group at Steeple Morden. Released 22/2/48. He joined the Essex Ambulance Service (later to become the London Ambulance Service) in 1949 as a Driver/Attendant working up the ranks to Ambulance Liaison Officer prior to retirement in 1980.

Les leaves a Wife, Son, 2 Grandchildren and 6 Great Grandchildren who miss him dearly.
