Barbara Pope: 9 October 1939 – 14 March 2010

My lovely Aunt, Barbara Pope lived in Suffolk for most of her life and always loved watching the aeroplanes flying to and from the local RAF airbases. She became a lifelong fan of the RAF, which is why my Uncle Doug chose to organise a donation to the RAFBF in her honour.

Barbara worked as a medical secretary in Pinner before marrying my Uncle Doug in 1965. They moved to Suffolk in 1965 and it was after this that she decided to take up dancing and joined the local dancing school to improve her skills. She quickly demonstrated a natural aptitude, becoming extremely proficient at it and qualifying as a dance teacher herself.

In 1976 we were absolutely thrilled to watch her dance her way to first place and win the prestigious Alex Moore Award at the Hammersmith Palais in London. We were equally proud to see her appear on BBC TVs “Come Dancing” in the Formation team.

As a teacher she built up an excellent reputation for teaching ballroom and Latin to all ages, shapes and sizes. I remember her quiet, gentle manner and endless patience when she taught us to waltz in the garden. She had a warmness and a grace about her which enabled her to build up an instant rapport with her students and really inspire them in their dancing.

This grace and poise never left her despite all the difficulties she had in the later stages of Alzheimer’s.

Barbara had many interests apart from her dancing and aeroplanes – fashion, art, theatre, reading (mostly hospital stories) and animals, Siamese cats being her favourites.

She and my Uncle Doug were happily married for nearly 45 years. They were a great team; I remember them at many family events getting stuck in with whatever job needed doing from washing up to decorating our garage for my wedding reception.

She was very special to all of us and we will miss her very much.
