I have been asked by the RAFBF to write a few words about my late father, Kenneth "Hawkeye" Lee of 501 squadron. Sadly, he passed away in February this year after a fall from which he was unable to recover.
At 92 years old he was lucky to have led a long , interesting and fruitful life; no small part of which was the time he spent in the RAF. I remember him often referring to his time in the airforce as some of the best times of his life.He felt he was privileged to partake in the Battle of Britain and so play his part in fighting to protect his country but he was always very detracting about his own role.
After the war he emigrated to East Africa where he dealt in cattle hides and there he met my mother Mary nee Moller. They were maried there and my older sister Penny was born there before they returned to set up a business in Ireland. After a short hiatus in Toronto, Canada we lived in Dublin until my father took early retirement and went to live in Southern Spain. He and my mother spent many happy years travelling the world together and adding to their many experiences.
They made the decision in the early 90's to return and settle in Sheffield so they could spend more time with the family and Dad took this as an opportunity to get involved in the various activities and organizations to do with the RAF and ex-servicemen. Lately the high points of his calendar were the different acts which he was invited to participate in, especially after his wife died a couple of years ago.
I think that he felt truly blessed and fortunate to have led such a full and rewarding life.
It was only after his death, when we received messages and eulogies from the people he had known - both in the past and more recently - that we realised the extent to which he was respected and appreciated by all who knew him.
