Appreciation For Anne Isobel Noel Penrose By Johan Minnaar

I met Mrs Penrose whilst working as an Optometrist in Truro in 1991.
My wife and I were invited to tea at Killiow Park " to see how the other half live ", as she put it. We were enthralled. After a hasty "tea", she banged her fist on the kitchen table and barked: " Now, how about some Gin ? " There we were on a Sunday morning, seated on an oak Settle in the kitchen of a Manor House listening to the tales of life in a beautiful home, whilst rapidly becoming inebriated on servings of half gin / half tonic. I vividly remember her description of catastrophe at a Dinner Party: " .........and the Cook, Irish fellow, dropped down dead in front of the Aga." Her account of her husbands death: "...... so we gave him a grand funeral."
When I enquired as to why the sculptures and statues were adorned with necklaces and hats, she replied: "......to irritate the snobs !"
Our sojourn to the U.K was richer for having met her - we received the most wonderful Christmas Cards in South Africa for a number of years and then sadly we lost touch. It was indeed a privilege to have known Mrs Penrose.
