Cpl Matthew Thomas, 24, from Swansea, was a member of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) and was also attached to the Special Forces Support Group (SFSG). He died after his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device in the Garmsir district of Helmand Province on 25th September 2010.

The Royal Engineers Association was formed under the conditions of a Deed of Declaration of Trust by the amalgamation of the original Royal Engineers Association and the Royal Engineers Benevolent Fund Ltd on 19 November 1968.
