L/Cpl James Bateman, 29, was killed on Wednesday 12th June, 2008 along with and Pte Jeff Doherty, 20, when Taliban fighters ambushed their patrol. The soldiers, from 2 Battalion The Parachute Regiment, were killed in a firefight with the Taliban in the Upper Gereshk Valley, Helmand Province.
L/Cpl 'Jay' Bateman, 29, from Staines, in Middlesex, married his wife Victoria last year.
The amateur boxer and keen fan West Ham United football club had served in Northern Ireland and Iraq and hoped to join the Special Forces Support Group.
He was "respected for being a gentleman as much as he was for his unbridled energy and professionalism".
His Company Commander, Major Adam Dawson, said: "He was the first to volunteer, the last to give up and above all extremely proud to be a paratrooper.
"His death leaves an irreplaceable gap."
Sgt Chris Lloyd, his platoon sergeant, said: "Jay was a larger than life character with a heart to match it. His job was second only to his love for his wife Victoria whom he doted upon."
