It made me quite emotional reading the comments and see my Grandpa's face.

I have incredibly fond memories of time spent with my grandpa listening to both war related and unrelated stories... He had such character and charisma that you never knew when he was pulling your leg - he did love a wind up did Percy.

I just wish I had the opportunity to witness what he was like as a mate, to his friends, when he was younger.

We certainly will miss 'Uncle' Percy.
He was a very charismatic individual and a strong character.
I should imagine that he was exactly the kind of person you would want to find yourself alongside during an episode like the the D Day invasion.
The invasion was the day before his 23rd birthday.
He must have wondered whether he'd ever live to see it. But we are thankful that he did.

 


 

Mrs Maria Walbyoff writes [4th January 2010]:

Percy was in 556 Special Field Company, R Force. He sailed to Normandy in the early hours of D Day on a Canadian LCI possibly No 15. He landed on Juno, St Aubain, Red Nan sector with the 48th Royal Marine Commandos and carried out mine detection, clearing, defusing booby traps until decoy skills were required.
After the war he was in Germany and worked on rebuilding bridges one of which I believe was later opened as the General Patton Bridge. He met his wife Simone when billeted in her parents’ ... [read more from Mrs Maria Walbyoff]
