Appreciation For Those Commemorated By The RNLI Memorial By Cdr David Hunkin Rn
I will never forget the tragic events of 19 December 1981. As a 13 year old with a deep affection for all things connected with the sea, I was profoundly moved by the utter selflessness and bravery of the crew of the Solomon Browne who offered their lives to save fellow seafarers in peril. It felt even more real for me as my grandfather, Alfred John Pengelly, knew the Coxswain, Trevelyan Richards. It is etched in my memory how Mr Richards chose his crew in order to minimise any family loss should the unthinkable happen; they all knew the risks but volunteered none the less, it was bravery of the highest order. During my Naval career, I have been privileged to work closely with the RNLI and have seen that this spirit of devotion and courage is as strong today as it ever was. I am also heartened to see the number of young people who volunteer which speaks volumes both for the Institution and the individuals themselves. The RNLI is truly a great organisation doing great work. I salute you all, both past and present, and am delighted to see the unveiling of a permanent memorial to the bravest of the brave.
