Ian Shaw who passed away on 4th January 2010 aged 58.
Ian served with the Derbyshire Fire Service from the age of 16 when he joined in 1967 as a Junior Fireman and retired in 2001 as a Divisional Officer. He loved the Service, thought of no other work and was dedicated to it.
He worked all his service in Derbyshire and at many of its stations and Headquarters. He was heavily involved in Fire Brigade Union work and sacrificed promotion several times to stay loyal to the lower ranks before finally and deservedly getting the higher one. He was involved in Union Negotiations at National Level and also legislation regarding Fire Safety and Fire Prevention.
Throughout his service he always raised money in many different ways for the Fire Service Benevolent Fund. It was close to his heart and so were the men and women he worked with and for.
He passed away after a short illness, he and his wife had moved to Spain in 2002 and at his Memorial Service, held in Derbyshire at the end of February, there was a collection, as he requested, for the Fire Fighters Charity.
