My father died on 1 November 1996 at the age of 76.
He was born in Sheffield in March 1920. He served in the Gordon Highlanders from 1935 until 1950, during which time he was taken prisoner during the Second World War at St Valery en Caux on 6 June 1940 at the time the troops were being evacuated from Dunkirk. He was a prisoner of war for 5 years in Stalag VIIIB in Poland. At the end of the war he continued in the Army and was part of the peace keeping force in Berlin until 1950.
He joined the Fire Brigade in Sheffield in 1950 and served for over 25 years untiol taking early retirement due to ill health.
He had three children - myself, born in 1949, my sister Margaret, born in 1954 and my brother, David, born in 1956. David has also served 30 years in the Fire Brigade in Sheffield, until his retirement.

Every year, thousands of fire fighters are injured whilst protecting the public. Every 30 seconds in the UK, fire fighters are called to an incident, putting their lives on the line, and often sustaining physical injuries whilst carrying out their duties. The Fire Fighters Charity is here for fire fighters during their times of need, and assists thousands of individuals every year, by providing pioneering treatment and support services.
