Fireman from 1939 to 1968 Holder of the Defence Medal and Exemplary Service Medal.

My father was a fireman with 28 years service and died 25th October 2009. He would have been proud to have such a good attendance from retired and serving fireman at his funeral. At 98 years old he must have been on of the last 2nd World War fireman from his watch in Blyth.

Here is the story of how a 98 year old fireman nearly didn’t make it to 40. In the 2nd World War my dad lead a convoy of trucks to Coventry and Birmingham when the bombing started there. After it was over they came back to Blyth the war was over and the mines were being cleared off Blyth beach. Later that year a grass fire was burning on the sand dunes at the beach not in a mine field area. Six firemen and an army sergeant went to put it out. My dad was at the engine when the mine exploded. Six men died some blown to bits, one died in my dads arms, he was the only one to survive.
