The Fire Fighters Charity

Also known as: Fletch.

Picture of Paul Fletcher.

Paul’s tragic death has been devastating for all who knew and worked with him, his family and his friends. Paul will be deeply missed as both a colleague and friend. I offer my personal sympathy and those of the Fire and Rescue Service to Paul's wife and children, as well as other family, his watch colleagues, friends and all who knew him. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

Paul was a credit to himself and the Service since joining in April 2004, previously serving with the police. Paul was promoted to Crew Manager in May 2009 and cared passionately about the Service and was dedicated to serving Island residents. Paul distinguished himself in several areas, notably in training and development, where he received the GO Union Learning Representative of the Year Award. He was a great ambassador for the Service and his passion for ensuring equality of access to development was recognised by all colleagues.

Paul was active and highly successful in working with the Fire Brigades Union nationally, regionally and locally, starting as brigade secretary and moving on to the post of regional chairman and learning co-ordinator.

We are all deeply saddened and will remember Paul for his laughter and thoughtfulness and who was loved by all.

Catherine Attrill writes [30 August 2010]:

to paul, a wonderful friend, son in law, and the best 'big brother' to lisa's brothers and sisters and all memebers of my lovely family. its been a little over a year now since we last kissed you goodbye and not a day has gone by that we have not thought of you with love and so much affection. its been a difficult year without you but many changes have taken place within our family and i know in my heart that you are watching over us all and making sure the changes are possitive and good for us all. thank you paul for still being there for us and watching over us all with such love.how i wish things could have been different and you were still here on earth for my beloved daughter lisa and your precious children chloe and josh. i know you watch over them and will be so proud of how they have coped with this heartbreaking year. i know your arms are around them all and your love is seeing them through step by step.how you must be cheering chloe on as she goes from strength to strength with her horse riding. many more rosettes and trophies around her room and she is flying round the jumps on her pony.and as for josh, goodness, the speed he flies round on that quad is breathtaking. they miss you so but lisa works hard at making sure they have the life you would have both wanted for them. how you must have laughed (lisa's words) at the abortive attempt to light the floating lanterns that lisa and the children released (well tried) on the anniversary of losing you.it ended up like a scene from thelwell! im sure you had a hand in the fiasco and were ditermined to put a smile on lisa's face that difficult day. lisa has tried so hard this year and i am very proud of her as i know you are too.
now beth is nagging me (you know our beth) too make sure you know she is always thinking of you 'bruvaaa' and all the family regularly talk of you. you were such and important person in their lives. all my grandchildren are encouraged to remember you and talk of how you would be pleased with all their achievements. there is never a chance you will be forgotten and are remembered with love. keep watching over us we need all the help we can get! god bless cathy xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Tony & Sarah Watkyn writes [3 December 2009]:

We have only just heard the tragic news about Pauls death.
My husband Tony served with Paul (AKA Fletch)on HMS Charybdis in the early 90's, he really was a top bloke and we were both very sad to hear of his passing.
A really great bloke and we have lots of fond memories especially the day many years ago in Sept 1991 that Paul gatecrashed our wedding but with permission (from Sarah's mum)as someone had pulled out.
Our deepest condolencies go out to his family and even though we had not seen him for years, those great memories will never fade.
God Bless & Rest In Peace Fletch and our thoughts are with your family. xxxxxxxxxx

Dominic Allen writes [16 October 2009]:

I served with Fletch on HMS Charybdis and HMS Andromeda from 1990 to 1992. We used to get the 0725 ferry from Ryde Pier Head every morning. He was in the ships football team and recommended me to the manager Andy Wellens. I think I did alright, I played regularly for the next 2 years. Cheers Fletch. He stood out as a matelot because he always had time for people. A commodity rarely seen these days unfortunately. When he left I bumped into him (on that damn ferry again!!!), he told me he was a policeman. Well actually he said he was in the FUZZ!! He remembered my Dad letting him into the Squadron a bit drunk one night. Typical sailor!! If you walk on this world you hope to leave a footprint. Fletch didn't, he left a path for others to follow.

Mark Scruby writes [9 October 2009]:

In such a short period of time that I had the opportunity to work with you you conducted yourself in such a professional manner. A true gentleman and a character, a smile that would light up the whole world. I have great memories of you and James Lucy working side by side at the Fire Service College, memories that will live with me for a long long time.
Paul my thoughts will always be with you.

Nigel Probert writes [23 September 2009]:

Paul, sorry for not writing sooner, but I have tried and failed so many times. It has taken me this long just to read all the other messages of condolence. This message is one of the hardest things that I have ever had to undertake.

I was completely taken aback when I learnt of your tragic death. I still cannot beleive it has happened. All of the recent pictures I have seen of you show that broad, grinning smile that everybody knows. That is how I will remember you, sat across the desk from me, grinning away, fidgeting and squirming in your seat as you did not have enough work to keep you busy.
Your dedication, enthusiasm and work ethic has impressed so many people, not just in the Fire Service, but in evertbody who knew you.

You have made a lasting impression on everybody. Your passing has left a legacy on this station that people are still trying to live upto. It can be clearly seen the impact you had upon people.

You will be missed by everyone that knew you. White Watch and I will ensure that your fantastic family will be well looked after. My deepest sympathy goes to your family and friends. I will never forget you, Nige.

Ali Slater writes [9 September 2009]:

Paul

You were such a great guy, quiet, unassuming, but with so much personality. I first knew you (and your family) a few years ago through Shanklin FC. You walked me home one night as you didn't want me walking home on my own! We lost touch for a while, but couldn't believe it when I met up with Lisa (an old school friend) to find you appear at her side as her soon to be husband!

I couldn't believe it when Mum called to tell me the sad news, I still can't believe it now. Can only think that Denize needed you to look after her.

Thinking of you Lisa and family, Les and Brenda at this difficult and sad time.

RIP Paul...one very special person

I only worked with Paul for a short period, but like so many others have very fond memories. Paul was a true gentleman who cared passionately about the Learning & Development agenda. I was delighted when Paul received the GO Union Learning Representative of the Year Award in London last March- it couldn’t have gone to anyone else! He was simply a true inspiration to us all.
Paul, you will be missed so very much. My thoughts are with your young family at such a sad time.
With all my love, Michelle xxx

Helen Poynter writes [9 September 2009]:

Today is a day to remember and say goodbye to a truly lovely man I had the pleasure of knowing. Your lovely smile and witty sense of humour I will remember, watching me struggle across the school field each day laughing and ‘asking where Martin was’! I will also remember you keenness to take part in the father’s race and you true sense of ‘win at all costs’ you definitely made me laugh and made your wonderful children proud of you.

You will be sadly missed by all your friends & colleagues, but I am confident your family will find strength from within to deal with their loss and remember all the happy times they spent with you.

Lisa & your children are a credit to you and my heartfelt thoughts are with them and your family at this time.

Barry Bushell writes [9 September 2009]:

Claire Holbrook writes [8 September 2009]:

Paul,

Its the eve of your funeral and I've read the comments here almost every day, its taken until now for me to express how shocked and sadden I have been by your leaving us.

I'm now sat polishing my shoes and thinking about the days since you left us here, the tears and grief we've all felt, the stories of good times I've heard and the things I never knew about you.It seems I am another one of your recruits, a 5 minute chat resulted in me leaving the union office the 'Womens Rep',and I'm not even sure what I went in there for!

I'm positive now that it is true that 'Only the good die young'. This book is testament to that. You have touched so many peoples lives that you inspire me to be a better person, selflessly help those who may need my help and take every opportunity that comes my way and do it all with a broad smile.

Tomorrow we all get to say good bye in the only way that seems fitting. You will be remembered fondly forever with sadness and laughter, my thoughts are with your family. I hope,in time, their broken hearts will mend.

Rest in Peace Paul, Sleep well.

You were a true gentleman a good friend and someone that was always full of life, nothing was ever too much, you have helped so many people and thats how I will remember you mate, not a bad word for anyone you were the best and what a great loss.

Aidy Wellock writes [7 September 2009]:

Fletch,

I owe a lot to you, from signposting me to my current job where we worked alongside each other over the last two years and also from you as a person. You where a passionate worker and put everything into your duties, you inspired others and had a brilliant sense of humour.

Your work ethic was nothing short of inspirational; a short phone call to tell you about your IT course would usually turn into a 30min bombardment on world domination. Conferences, trips to other brigades, union meetings and training courses were just some of the events I got to work with you on through your work with the Brigade and the FBU, looking back, we had some great times and this world will not be able to replace you.

This book of condolences will only touch on a very small percentage of the people in this world that you have helped and although your life has been short, we will carry on with the pride in our hearts and minds of knowing such a true gent.

God bless, to you and your loving family.

Aidy Wellock

John Harbar writes [5 September 2009]:

The loss of someone in the family younger than oneself is always a great shock. Paul was our nephew who we had seen grow up over the years in West London. Watched from afar his Royal Navy days, his adventurous pursuits in, protection duties, the police force and then as a firefighter. Being on the mainland we have steadily lost touch making phone calls occasionally and inevitably the years have regretably passed by without see him, Lisa, the children, or his Mum and Dad. Having made plans to take a short break on the island this very week to see everyone and to make up for some of that lost time has now demonstrated very painfully that we should never put off till tomorrow what can be done today. If only we had booked a month earlier ! It will be a very sad week. We have become increasingly proud of Paul having read accounts of his hitherto unknown work with the NFS, winning awards for his efforts, yes very proud. There was much more to this man,our nephew, than we ever appreciated. God bless you Paul R.I.P. Aunty Jean & Uncle John

Sheena Ives writes [4 September 2009]:

it was with such shock and sadness that I read of Paul's passing. Much has been said of his time with the fire service but I recall Paul as a friend and colleague from his service in Hampshire Police. Just as he has displayed his professionalism in the fire serivce he one of those blokes in Hampshire Police you could rely on and trust to back you up should it be needed; a true professional. Paul was one of the good blokes who never should have left us so early, and it is with such sadness that I find myself making this tribute. Our thoughts are with Pauls's wife and children who must be devastated at his loss. May God bless you all.

Kev Ellis writes [4 September 2009]:

I am still totally shocked by the loss of Paul.I have tried to write something all week but every time could not find the words to express the sadness of his sudden departure.

I had the privilege and pleasure of working with Paul as part of the rope team and will always remember him with a smile on his face, even when he would get stuck fast on the rope and we had to remind him of the sequence of events to get him down!!
The courses he encouraged me to attend - even if they weren't as interesting as he had promised!!

Paul was a true Gentleman, a person who would start something and see it through to the end, He will be a great loss to the fire service.

My thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues

Beverley Sparkes writes [4 September 2009]:

As We Look Back.

As we look back over time
We find ourselves wondering .....
Did we remember to thank you enough
For all you have done for us?
For all the times you were by our sides
To help and support us .....
To celebrate our successes
To understand our problems
And accept our defeats?
Or for teaching us by your example,
The value of hard work, good judgement,
Courage and integrity?
We wonder if we ever thanked you
For the sacrifices you made.
To let us have the very best?
And for the simple things
Like laughter, smiles and times we shared?
If we have forgotten to show our
Gratitude enough for all the things you did,
We're thanking you now.
And we are hoping you knew all along,
How much you meant to us.

Annette Domoney writes [4 September 2009]:

I had the priveledge of knowing Pauland his family outside of his work. However, the last time I met up with him was at a Health and Safety training day (Council), I think it was in May. He was so full of his role in the Fire Service and his respect for his colleagues there. It was obvious he enjoyed his job and the challenges it posed.Paul always gave 150% to everything he undertook and did this without thinking. He will be an enormous loss to the Fire Service and such a devastating loss to his lovely family. With great respect. Annette Domoney

Leighton Bryant writes [4 September 2009]:

Paul,
I will remember you for your enthusiasm, energy and drive. At times I couldn't keep up with your desire to push through all your ideas for Learning and development through your role as a Union Learning Co-ordinator.
The Service has come a long way as a result of your dedication and belief that opportunities for everyone to become more educated should be available.

I regret not getting to know you better as reading other comments indicate how much love and respect your friends and peers had for you.

I laugh looking back at the state of your ears after the last BA Refresher;it was typical of you to admit it was your own fault just because you didn't want to be beaten and exit sooner.

My thoughts are with your family,It must be so painful for them but if there is any consolation you died doing something you loved.

The Service has lost someone with huge potential who definately had a great career ahead of them.I shall miss you

John Keywood writes [4 September 2009]:

This is a poem i found

A FIREMAN'S LAST GOODBYE

I have passed over to the other side of God's rainbow
Where I watch the angels fly
For I have a great vantage point
From my new home in the sky.

I offer God all my praise and glory,
For he has granted me his heavenly grace
Now, all my former earthly problems
Have simply vanished, without a trace.

I ask my loving family
That they not mourn too long and cry
And as you wipe away the tears
Try not to reason why????

For God in his infinite love and wisdom
Has His own timetable and master plan
And as time passes by
We will all better understand.

Now, I tip my cap and direct a kiss
To my loving family and best friends
I salute all my brave brother firefighters
Who served with me until the very end.

Now, I bid you all a fond and heartfelt last goodbye
From my new home in the sky
Where the saints and angels fly.

Paul
Seems appropriate that i am sending you a final email. I'm still catching up on the thousands you've sent me! Just reading the comments posted reminds us of the impact you have made.
I have had the immense pleasure and privelege to have worked with you but we had only just started, we were going to change the world! We planned it all whilst sharing a bed in a cheap hotel in Kings Cross (but that's another story).
'Catch up soon' mate. Love to Lisa and the family xxx

Not, how did he die, ut how did he live?
Not, what did he gain, but what did he give?
These are the units to measure the worth
Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.
Not, what was his church, nor what was his creed?
But had he befriended those really in need?
Was he ever ready, with a word of good cheer?
To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?
Not what did he sketch in a newspaper say,
But how many were sorry when he passed away?

Luke Hingert writes [3 September 2009]:

Fletch,
When we first met at training school you were instantly a likeable, friendly character. Then when we were both put on Blue watch you became a true friend and someone who I looked up to and have a great deal of respect for. You always had a happy caring nature, and you quickly appointed yourself as my ‘life coach’ and ‘relationship advisor’ along side Jim’ll. Although I think your advice was a little more suitable than Jim’lls at times!
You were always willing to help anyone no matter how busy you were, and I never once saw you down or unhappy. Just always with a unique good cheer and patience, even with the countless chants of “are you still in the force Fletch”!!

I will always remember the jokes and piss taking around the tea table and many laughs shared around the station whilst reeling the station rat in, spooking people with the mask, moving your office furniture about, and the many more hours of antics.
I will also remember the many hours spent working along side you at incidents. Some were fun and some were challenging, but I will always be proud to have been there by your side.
But even more so, I will remember you for being an interesting, enthusiastic, honest friend who was a pleasure to be around.

Although you have been taken before your time, I feel privileged and honoured to have known you and call you my friend.

My thoughts are with Lisa, Chloe and Josh.

I will never forget you Fletch

Paul

You were a gentleman in the true sense of the word. You always had a smile and a greeting for me. The work you have done to enhance the learning opportunities for everyone in the Service is legendary and is a testament to the way you cared for everyone.

Justin Boyle writes [3 September 2009]:

It was a great shock to me learning of the tragic loss of Fletch. I am proud to say I was privileged to work with Fletch whilst I served In Hampshire Constabulary. It was an amazing surprise to me when I met him again at an FBU meeting, discovering that we had both left the Police in order that we could become Firefighters. I know that he was extremely proud of the uniforms he wore.

If we can be, even a little bit like Fletch, we will strive to have the best Emergency Services in the world!

I’d just like to say thanks Fletch for when we, ‘Swung the lamp!’

Shane Hayward writes [2 September 2009]:

I still cannot find the words to express my disbelief in the tragic loss of Paul. You were always a friendly face around the station and would always spare the time for a chat. I will remember our rope training days with a smile as I am sure the rest of our team will, 'I cant get down'! was a favourite quote from the early days but you managed ok in the end. I will miss you as 'the big guy' to go first ! A truly great team mate, it was always a pleasure and I thank you for that.
My thoughts and sincere condolences go out to your wife, children and family.

Ben Lister writes [2 September 2009]:

I was totally shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic and untimely death of Paul Fletcher.
I was a trainee on the same recruit course as Paul training for SF&RS from may to Aug 2004.
As part of our passing out parade, I somehow managed to volunteer myself to carry out a kitchen fire display in front of what seemed like hundreds of officers and all our friends and families.
What struck me with Paul was his thoughtfulness for others around him. I tried extremely hard to find a willing volunteer to carry out the demonstration with me in front of all our proud parents, but could find nobody!
I think Paul could see I was anxious with the thought of doing it on my own. Paul came up to me a few days before and said he'd do it with me to take the pressure off, and so we did the demo as a duo.
Being a helping hand as a recruit with me, i'm sure Pauls attributes were a pleasure to work with in the fire service.
My sincerest thoughts are with Pauls family, friends and work colleagues at this difficult time.

Adrian Ryan writes [2 September 2009]:

I had the pleasure of working with Paul when he was ULR coordinator, the passion, enthusiasm he showed was fantastic. He helped change peoples lives through learning and everyone he met across the trade union movement will miss him. I recently spent an afternoon with Paul at an award ceremony and it was my priviledge to present an award to him which was richly deserved. Paul always had a smile and a story when we met which meant visits to the Island were always worthwhile and very enjoyable.
My thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this very sad time.

Danny Johnson writes [2 September 2009]:

I was very sad to hear the tragic news that Paul (Fletch) had passed away. I had the privilege of spending twelve weeks with Paul when he joined the service in 2005. I'm not sure that the feelings were reciprocated but then I was his squad instructor in Surrey when he joined. He always gave me the impression that he was up to something with a scheming look here and a witty comment there. I had no doubt that Paul would become a very good Firefighter and a very popular member of the Service. My heart goes out to Pauls family and friends at this very sad time.

you meet people in this life who, for their caring and concerns bring character and integrity to the everyday workspace. One of the good people it is good to have met.

We did our prepatory adult teaching course together last year and your insight and intellect shone through, some of it may have rubbed off on me, a miracle!

Your passion and personal dynamic is going to be missed. I'm sure your comrades in the south will miss you terribly.
Your family will be rightly proud of the contribution you've made to the FBU, the Fire & Rescue Service and the wider society you worked in. Thanks should go them for loaning you to us.

John Winwood writes [2 September 2009]:

Today is the first time I have been able to write about Fletch because when ever I have tried before, the words just do not do justice to my thoughts.
Five years ago, when asked who I wanted to join Blue Watch, I asked for the oldest and youngest recruit, I could not know then that decision meant that the lives of all of Blue Watch would be enriched by the man we all came to know as Fletch.
As Paul guided me through his NVQ process, it was obvious that Paul brought special qualities to the Fire Service.
His infectious laughter and his mischevious humour brought so many happy hours to all of his colleagues.
Pauls generosity of spirit will live on with us all, we all feel so cheated at this time by your loss. All of Blue Watch will remember those special years spent with Paul, for the rest of our lives.
Lisa and family, my thoughts are with you, everyday, at this difficult time.

I was dumbstruck when I heard of Paul's death. We had met only a handful of times, and generally communicated in a friendly exchange of emails. We shall miss you, Paul. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

Fletch, I'm so glad that I had the privilage of working along side you on Blue watch. I have, like many others so many fond memories of you, the Hastings and New Forest Half Marathons being just a couple. I remember how much I was struggling on the New Forest, you and John had already finished so I know your legs must have been seizing up, but you found the strength to run the last 100m again with me to get me over that finish line. That's the kinda guy you were so supportive in work and in play. One of lifes true gentlemen.

James Lucy writes [31 August 2009]:

Fletch,
Mate I'm not sure i can put into words the happiness you brought to other peoples lives in your relatively short time. We first met five to six yrs ago when you and the 'boy wonder' joined us on Blue. You'd known my brother in the police, were mad keen on sport, and so immeadiately, we were friends. It took you no time at all in quizzing me on which of the siblings were the oldest, despite knowing full well nathan was five years senior to me!

In those years, sat next to each other at the tea table, i got a firm picture of what 'Fletch the man' was about. Towards me it was essentially laughs and piss-taking, but you were both generous and caring, genuinely wanting to see others do well, even if they did copy your spelling mistakes when submitting their NVQ work !! From the fun days of fighting the hay bails on fire - stoking it up so poor daz kept getting smoked out, giggling at his watering red eyes, and offering Luke far more 'Life Coaching' than he ever could cope with - to the more somber road deaths we had to attend, it truly was a pleasure to be around you. I looked up to you with respect, not only for your drive and enthusiasm, but also for the way you were a superb family man.

We worked, ate, and slept together. When we both got promoted it was a proud day for us both. On the incident command course, you were unsuprisingly both competent and popular, basically taking over many incidents from the OIC (whether they realised it or not).
and as for the Xmas tree picture ... Good times.

I hope we meet again some day, Jim'll. x

Ray Garrett writes [31 August 2009]:

Barrie Wade writes [30 August 2009]:

Paul. We first met when you were 16 yrs old and I was 18 and playing for Shanklin FC. I then had the honour of becoming a good friend of yours and your family, and what a family you are. How canny that many years later we should end up both working on the same shift in the Police. We had many laughs and the practical jokes that me, you and Norman shared are memories that will live for ever. Your infectious smile and laugh will always be remembered, as will the laughs I shared with you, your Mum, Dad and Denize. Mate, taken so suddenly is heartache for a lot of people, but obviously your dedication, enthusiam and unselfish attitude to life and people was needed elsewhere. Sleep tight fletch, say hi to Denize. Bazza x

Paul was held in high esteem amongst officials and members of Hampshire FBU. His work was well regarded and he will be sorely missed.
I met Paul at FBU Conference and found him to be always helpfuland understanding. He was a very funny guy and though I didn't know him as well as some, I wish that I had that priviledge.I know from speaking with Isle of Wight firefighters that Paul was thought of with great affection and respect as both a union rep but also as a firefighter and a man.

Please can I express my sympathy to Pauls family and if there is anything I or Hampshire FBU can do please dont hesitate to ask.

Paul Trew Hampshire FBU Secretary and firefighter

Fletch, can't believe you went out and never came back. You were taken away from us and it's a loss no one will ever recover from.

Your enthusiasm at work was infectious and you've left too great a gap to ever replace.

Can't stop thinking about your family and what they must be feeling and going through. My heart goes out to them.

Take care.

Des Williamson writes [28 August 2009]:

I am both shocked and saddened to hear of Paul's untimely passing away.

Paul was a credit to our professional Service. His work ethic and commitment to the fire and rescue service in general and to training & development in particular enthused and inspired us all. However, he will be mostly remembered for his cheerfulness and good company: He never entered a room without bringing a ready and genuine smile along with him!

A great guy and a true professional; he will be sadly missed.

My condolence to all that loved you, and worked with you. I will miss you my friend.

Dean Mills writes [27 August 2009]:

Paul was not only a credit to the Fire Service and Fire Brigades Union but to society itself.

When we were looking a few years ago for succession planning within the FBU Pauls name was at the top of the list and he took to each role with enthusiasm, dedication, and selflessness.

The work Paul did, in addition to demonstrating professional firefighting at its best, has enabled others to advance, learn and grow. Without his drive and hard work many people would not have been able to access the new opportunities they now enjoy.

Within the community that is Fire Service Paul will be sorely missed. But the extent of his service to others reached beyond the Fire Service and Emergency Services. Respected by FBU officials and TUC tutors his ability and hard work were acknowledged and if he had a task to do you knew it would be done to the very highest of standards.

A huge thank you to Paul’s family for all the support you gave him and accepting the time away from home he spent help others.

All in the Fire Service give some of themselves, and some, like Paul, give all of themselves.

Rest in Peace Paul in was an honour knowing and working with you.

Dave Dymond Regional Fbu writes [27 August 2009]:

Like many other people I have only known Paul for a short period of time, but I quickly came to appreciate his endless enthusiasm and willingness to support others. He was also willing tackle any issue by leading others.
His sudden loss has come as a big shock and I believe will leave a hole in many people’s heart.
My sympathy is with his family and friends at this time.
I hope we can continue his legacy of good works with the same caring friendly outlook on life.

Johnnyboy Sedgeley writes [27 August 2009]:

It has taken so long to try and express my feelings and respect for Fletch.
From the very first day we joined the F/S Paul has always been there for me. In the 14weeks we were at training school and the 5 happy years serving Station 1, we shared so many laughs and good times together.
It goes without saying, his dedication to the job and FBU was exemplary and only very recently has he "signed me up" for 3 forthcoming T.U Courses (i only popped in his office for a chat at the time)!!!
The vast hole he has left in our service and our hearts will never be fully filled.
He took great pride in his work, but the proudest thing in Paul's life, was his family. Who my thoughts and prayers are with at this time xxx
Sleep well mate x

Mark Freer writes [27 August 2009]:

Mark Freer Fire Officer Hmp IoW Prison (Parkhurst)
We only met when we had Cell Fires, But i thankyou for your help and support you gave me, you will be missed Paul, God Bless you Paul.

Rachael Fidler writes [27 August 2009]:

all at HTP training would like to add their condolances to Paul's family and say how much we will miss him. Vicki met Paul by chance at a meeting and all our work snowballed from there with his enthusiasm for training and to support his colleagues through the Union, to learn. if it hadn't of been for Paul we wouldn't have the links with the fire service we have and the many people who are training would not be doing so. Neither would we have won our Union Learn award. Thank you Paul, I'm sure there will be a drink in your hand somewhere up there xxx

Johnny Apter writes [27 August 2009]:

Paul and I were on shift together when he was a Police Officer at Southampton Central. We had such a laugh back then getting up to things that we couldnt get away with any more!!!
I remember we were trying to stop a fight which was getting out of hand, I used my CS Gas but Paul didnt get out of the way in time so he got a dose, the fight ended but Paul was out of action for a while! I remember him saying,'bloody hell, that CS works'..
Not many people could achieve what you did in your short life mate. Cant believe you are no longer with us. God bless Paul, Im sure if Heaven have a Union you will be in there sorting things out.

Johnny Apter - Hampshire Constabulary

Southamtpon City Council Union Learning Centre writes [27 August 2009]:

Although we had only known Paul for a short time it was obvious that he was very passionate about learning and improving the skills of the work force. It is because of this dedication that a new Southampton/Hampshire Cluster Group has been set up. Without him it would never have happened. All our thoughts are with his family and colleagues at this very sad time. He will be sorely missed but you can rest assured that his spirit will live on at many Union Learning Centres up and down the country.

Alan Sillman writes [27 August 2009]:

I have never ceased to be amazed by Paul's enthusiasm and dedication to progressing the opportunity for others to improve thier lives through education.

It has been a privilage to work alongside Paul in his role within the FBU. The Union, and all who were touched by Pauls actions in other ways will miss him greatly.

On behalf of myself, and of Oxfordshire FBU members.

Thank you Paul!

Damon Corr writes [26 August 2009]:

Paul's positive attitude, light heartedness and deep conviction for doing the best he could for others endeared him to those of us RDS that associated with or worked with him in any capacity when he visited us at Ryde Fire Station.

My thoughts are with his family and those closest to him in the hope that the memory of knowing such a decent man provides the strength to overcome this painful time. Paul and the things he achieved shall never be forgotten.

Shaun Elvers writes [26 August 2009]:

Paul was on the most honest and nicest blokes I have had the privalege to work with. Only a few weeks ago we were racing against each other at the Dad's race at our childrens pre-school sports day - he tried to trip me up!!! Paul has left a huge gap within the Service which will perhaps never be filled. His work ethic, especially in life long learning is one reason why so many staff within the service are undertaking further training - Paul's dedication to the job was second to none. You will be missed by friend but keep smiling. My families thoughts are with Paul's wife, young children and parents. We all owe Paul so much.

Martin Merritt writes [26 August 2009]:

Brian Mccranor writes [26 August 2009]:

Only the good die young... how true that is because Paul was good in every sense. A lovely man who made an impact from day one in the Fire Service. Paul had only just started at Newport when he told me he had a sponsor for our planned charity cycle ride to Prague, nobody asked him to do this he just did it. This was the selfless way Paul went about his life, doing things for others and not looking for anything in return. His death is a massive loss for the Fire Service, it will need a very special person to fill his shoes. I do not know his family but my thoughts are with them and I pray that the memories thay have of Paul will give them the strength to help them through this sad and difficult time.

Andrew Cooper writes [26 August 2009]:

Fletch it has been a true pleasure to have known, worked, laughed and had some great times together.

Thank you for your tireless efforts and all your hard work for so many, whether they knew it or not.

I shall never forget your wonderful sense of humour and cheeky giggle.

My heartfelt condolences to your lovely family, who meant the world to you.

May you rest in peace mate.
