The Fire Fighters Charity

Picture of Ewan Williamson

The tragic death of Firefighter Ewan Williamson, 35, has been devastating for all who knew and worked with him, his family and his friends.

Since Ewan’s death was announced, messages of support and condolences have been coming in from across the UK and I thank everyone for their kind words and thoughts at this very difficult time.

Of course uppermost in my mind is Ewan’s family who will have to bear this tragedy in the days and months to come. As the family told me, Ewan’s death came as an horrific shock but even in their grief, the love and pride they had for him was clear to see.

I can pay no better tribute than to use their words to describe the kind of man Ewan was – wonderful, kind, outgoing, a great sportsman and loved by everyone.

If Tears Could Build A Stairway

If tears could build a stairway
And memories were a lane
We would walk right up to Heaven
And bring you back again

No farewell words were spoken
No time to say goodbye
You were gone before we knew it
And only God knows why

Our hearts still ache in sadness
And secret tears still flow
What it meant to lose you
No on will ever know

But know we know you want us
To mourn for you no more
To remember all the happy times
Life still has much in store

Since you’ll never be forgotten
We pledge to you today
A hallowed place within our hearts
Is where you’ll always stay

Alex Carmichael writes [22 July 2009]:

It is difficult to express appreciation for a loss of life.

I am considering an individual that I did not know, but, I am considering an idividual that was prepared and willing to commit himself for persons unknown because he was committed to the best.

The decision to go to work that day was based on the basic and pure principles of what would be best.

He wished to satisfy the requirements of both the service and his colleagues. He achieved, beyond the call, most more than we would wish.

I offer my thanks, I wish his family the most condolances, but also, the best of memories

To colleagues, inspiration....he was there, up front, prepered,,,willing.

Can I hope that his vitality is not lost and that whenever colleagues are entering into situations that may be relatively unsafe ( God forbid ), they remember him, and perhaps do not suffer the same fate.

My Respects to all Fire and Rescue Services, regional, national, international, for the work you do.

Thank you. ( may not be enough )

Alex. Carmichael.

On hearing the tragic news about Ewan,a young firefighter who last his life in the line of duty, I would to express our sincerest condolences to his mother, sisters, girlfriend his entire family circle and colleagues at Lothian & Borders Fire & Rescue Service.

Sadly we can relate to his distraught family and know exactly the pain that they are suffering at this sad time, because my husband, Joe McCloskey, died in similar circumstances while tackling a fire at the Gorteen House hotel at Halloween 2003.

Joe had been a serving fire fighter for over 25 years and like Ewan he was dedicated and loved the Fire Service and was a loving and devoted husband and father.

This event highlights the difficult and gruelling circumstances that fire fighters have to face daily, which can often tragically end with harsh consequences. Every year thousands of firefighters are injured whilst carrying out their duties.

The Fire Fighters Charity will endeavour to support those close to Ewan, as they struggle to come to terms with this tragedy, and we will do our utmost to ease their pain and suffering wherever possible."
