Appreciation For Peter Scheuer By Alison Rogers

Appreciation For Peter Scheuer By Alison Rogers

Tribute from Alison Rogers, Chief Executive, British Liver Trust

Peter Scheuer was a phenomenal man. He was talented, humorous, wise, modest, slow to judge and a source of great joy. I have never known any other person so universally liked and admired.
Peter was an absolute stalwart at the British Liver Trust; he served the Trust with great thoughtfulness and generosity throughout all his years as Trustee, Chairman of our Medical Advisory Committee and latterly as Vice Chairman of the Trust. Even during his last few months he was keen to ensure that the house was in order and that a new Vice Chairman had been lined up to take his place. His lack of ego, practical and sensible attitude was always refreshing and made him a joy to work with and for.
Peter was a world-leading expert on the pathology of the liver, wrote the definitive work on liver pathology and was always generous in sharing his knowledge with great enthusiasm. He was teacher and mentor to a large number of liver pathologists from all over the world, many now distinguished in their own right. His personal research led to important understanding not only of liver pathology, but of the clinical course and disease mechanisms in many liver diseases.
Peter took great interest in people from all walks of life and revelled in life’s quirks and ambiguities. He was a keen fundraiser and helped both the Royal Free and the British Liver Trust very substantially in their endeavours. I am especially sad that he was not able to see the further progress of the Trust which he had worked so hard to initiate.
On a personal note, Peter was a mentor to me, as well as a supporter of many good causes. He always offered constructive help, did not remark on failure and was a huge source of strength and inspiration. His gentle motivation made me feel that I should attempt to live up to expectations which he never set.
He will be very very sadly missed by a large community of people. Our most heartfelt sympathies go out to Louise and her family.
