My father died last week after a slow decline in recent years. I would like now to take the time to acknowledge the man he was and the memories I have.

He was a highly intelligent man with a sharp sense of humour. He gave us a childhood of happy security with many fond memories. Of holidays spent in Dover where we would spend our days on Folkstone Beach in the alcoves and our evenings at 'Micheals' Resaurant (it was actually just a cafe but felt like a posh restaurant to us kids - it was a real treat!) followed by a quick tour around the amusement arcades where we were all given a set amount of money to spend in the machines. Happy times.

There were holidays on the Norfolk Broads with Dad at the wheel with his captains hat! As ever he took his responsiblities as Captain serious and was forever studying the maps and tides.

We shared a love of sport and spent many an afternoon watching the Grand Prix or Rugby or athletics and although he was a cricket fan too - I couldn't quite get into that.

He has been through more heartache than you would ever wish on anyone and we have had our rough times - however he was my DAD and I love him.

I hope he has finally found the peace he deserves.

Sylvia Allen writes [4th March 2012]:

I have known Peter for over 40 years and spent many hours with him and Geraldine, including a holiday in Tunisia. I had a lot of respect for him and loved his smile.

Paul Jacobs writes [2nd March 2012]:

I first met Peter when I was a boy and he started going out with Geraldine. Then they moved away and several decades elapsed. After that I would meet him briefly on family occasions, and I was struck by how well-informed he was on current affairs and other matters.

In later years he was more subdued and would appear not to be listening to the conversation going on around him. Then he would make a perceptive remark which showed he was enjoying the company.

May he rest in peace.

With fond memories we will remember over the years leaving our car on our journeys to and from Gatwick when we were never going to stop but ended up with tea, biscuits and long chats putting the worlds to rights.

Peter was my cousin and I have many fond memories of outings etc. which we did together. My earliest memory was of a family outing and picnic on a very cold Sandwich beach one summer's day, also of playing cricket with my Father and Peter in the garden - they were both very keen cricket fans! Later we used to have the occasional game of tennis and trips to Lords Cricket ground to watch Middlesex play, also we visited the Dominion cinema in Harrow to listen to some of the big bands of the day perform ... I served with Peter on Lincolns at Hemswell in the 50s. We were on 97Squadron , Flew together, lived in the same wing, had great nights out in Gainsboro and Lincoln.
I came from Ealing and Peter from Harrow and i often visited his home. We all go our own ways, and the holiday memories mentioned by VIV remind me of holidays with my three at various resorts in Dorset, Devon Cornwall, Sussex, and evenings in amusement arcades.

Pete and I were good friends on 2013 Squadron at RAF Topcliffe during the middle 195'0s. Pete was always cheerful with a great sense of humour despite a wheels up landing when flying with Flt. Lt. Spike Sparkes. Both Spike and his co-pilot forgot to put the wheels down. The aircraft was written off!

Pete was great company and on more than one occasion he took me home to meet his mother who provided huge dinners, more than I could possibly eat, cooked to perfection.

Unfortunately we lost ... [read more from Bill (taff) Lovelock]
