Thanksgiving Service
Michael (Dad or Pompa) died after a short illness, on Friday the 10th of February. At his request, and our absolute delight, a Thanksgiving Service will be held for him on Saturday the 3rd of March 2012 at St. Lalluwy’s Church, Menheniot at 12.30 p.m.
The request was that everyone should be in bright clothing as this should be a Thanksgiving Service and not a Mourning.
After the service, there was a request for a ‘Happy Wake’ in the Quethiock School.
We will do our best to oblige on all counts.
Directions
The Church is in the centre of the village.
For those with Sat Nav typing in Menheniot should suffice.
For those coming from East should head West into Cornwall on the A38. After crossing over the Tamar Bridge, go through the villages of Landrake and Tideford and thereafter follow the signposts!
Those wishing to stay
There are some great B&Bs to be found in Kingsand/Cawsand area (close to Edward and Moi) at www.crabpot.co.uk
More hotels can be found going onto www.booking.com
Although nothing is formally planned we may well meet up on the Sunday with those staying and have a walk or a pub lunch.
Celebrating Michael’s Life
To celebrate Michael’s life, we have at his request, set up an online celebration for him on this website the inspiration for which came some years after David’s death.
Please feel free to use this page to contribute your own special memories of Michael, perhaps even with a photograph that we may not have seen before.
The page will serve as an enduring testimonial to him and a touching record for generations to come. As you will see, a direct link has been provided to the RAF Benevolent Fund where Michael wished donations in lieu of flowers to be made. For those preferring not to donate online there will be pew envelopes in the Church.
If any more information is required about the arrangements then please drop Jonathan an email at jonathan@friendsandrelations.com

This is the second attempt - I never was much good with technology!
Michael or Pompa as he was otherwise affectionately known was my Grandfather and he was always very generous both with his time and with his love. I remember fondly when he and Margaret came to watch me skydive, the briefing was very early and for most of the day the weather was looking grey and overcast but we were told that it was likely to clear up by the afternoon and Pompa and Margaret stayed in the briefing room pretty much all day until I was FINALLY able to make my jump. Other good memories ... [read more from Harry Haward]
Michael just made life better in every way. Need one say more?
This comes with love and sympathy from the Jack family who remember Michael with great fondness. My mother, Sheena, was saddened to hear that Michael has gone, but memories were evoked of wonderful holidays spent with my father, Donald, in Cornwall enjoying Michael and Maggie's wonderful hospitality. She loved receiving his letters each Christmas, and has a collection of them in a box in her room, which she used to reread with great pleasure over the years. I, too, think often of Michael and ... I am reminded by Jonathan's comments about Michael's detailed instructions of how to cut the lawn.
Having met Michael at the funeral for David, we kept in touch and my wife and I were sad to see his passing in The Times. Please accept our deepest sympathy. His wishes as regards his funeral seem to me to encapsulate his zest for life. We shall be thinking of you all on 3rd March, and remembering a fine man. Warm good wishes to you all,
I have so many precious memories of my brother and our childhood days at the Wold. We always had such fun together, often getting up to mischief with Michael being the instigator, but I never remember being Scolded for our activities.
Uncle Michael lived life with great zest. I will never forget his sense of fun, most memorably his teasing of Marigold on holiday in Cornwall (With assistance from my brothers John and Stephen). He loved gardening and I was always amazed and the quantity and quality of the produce even from his small garden in Mutton Row.
My memories of Michael, my uncle and my godfather are of a real gentlemen,in every sense of the word, with a great sense of fun, certainly giving his sister Marigold constant ragging on our Cornish family holidays. He was a very caring person, who often rang us to enquire how our family were and what we were all doing. We send our deepest sympathy to Maggie and all the large family of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by so many people David Day writes [5th March 2012]:
The Days celebrate their contact with Mike over many years. He served as Chairman of Governors for Quethiock VA CE School and was 'one of the best' in that role. He let me get on with the job, offered praise where due and an 'interview with the CO' when things went wrong - which was a pretty fair set-up.
We also acknowledge his useful advice in all matters relating to fruit - from how to grow cordon currants to the name of the ... [read more from David Day]

I remember everytime I set about the lawn edges on our front lawn, a very large lawn so always a challenge.
At one of the girls weddings I had for the previous 3 weeks cut the lawn in exactly the same direction and kept the stripes gun barrel straight I was very proud of it. Michael's comment with that infectious smile was " Very good but it would look so much better if the edges were properly done" ... [read more from John Pawlyn]

My visits to Quethiock brought much happiness and memories of Cornwall and our many lovely holidays. Not bad for a 1st attempt.....
After being in hospital for a couple of days, Dad wanted a shave and I was entrusted to give him a hand.
This caused us both merriment and I did suggest that, if he did not let me get on with it, I would take it upon myself to tidy his eyebrows up.
After a bit of gentle banter, the job was done – he touched his face and said, ‘not bad for a first attempt’. Those words have been with me for the last couple of weeks and they actually sum up the gentle and heartfelt ... [read more from Jonathan Haward]
