Friends and Relations

Mother was a very private person, but one of her sisters and her surviving brother asked me to add her name because she was loved by many people and worthy of being remembered. I have written a very short account of her life covering the two topics which stand out in her 87 years, how do you précis thousands of happy memories?

She was a family orientated lady who was very happily married to my dad for 49 years; her social life revolved around her family, both her children, her grandchild, her three brothers, her seven sisters and her nieces and nephews. She was a mine of information about the whole extended family and enjoyed visits from them or long chats on the phone. Of the people she saw outside the family, she formed strong and long lasting friendships, but she hated to visit others much preferring to see people in her own home.

Of her working life, in an era before women’s liberation, she supported my dad with her sound common sense and decent hard work in taking over the family business and making a success of it. The age in which she was brought up conditioned her to step back and give all the credit to my dad, but he was the first to acknowledge that it was an equal partnership.

I am proud of both my parents and will miss them for the rest of my life.

Claire Farrimond writes [4th February 2012]:

Joan was my father's eldest sister and was a big part of our lives. We would stay with her and Eric for weeks on end: their hospitality was warm, kind and unobtrusive, and they were both great fun.
