Dedicated to the life and memory of Eric George Desmond Raynes.
Eric was born in Cario, Egypt on 8th Oct 1923.while his father a Lance corporal was serving with the 9th Lancers in Egypt. Unfortunately Eric’s father’s military service sadly came to an abrupt end after suffering a fatal horse riding accident. Eric’s mother was forced to return to England with their 4 children.
At the age of 4 yrs Eric and one of his siblings where sent to the home for little boys in Farningham, Kent where he remained until the age of 14 yrs. On leaving the home Eric found work in the watch making trade in Holborn until the war stopped this trade. Eric then joined the RAF and met his wife to be Muriel under the clock tower in Blackpool. A week or two later Eric was posted to North Africa repairing delicate aircraft instruments.
Eric wrote many letters to his beloved Muriel during this time and eventually in 1946 they were married at Deal church in Kent They both started their married life working in service on the nearby Sandwich estate. Eventually they moved back to South London. Eric settling down to a career in engineering while Muriel raised their three children in the family home.
Eric was devoted and immensely proud of his family, worked hard and enjoyed many happy holidays abroad.
Eric was a keen sportsman and had many fond memories of his youth playing for “Cooperville” a local football team. Eric’s was also a keen supporter of Crystal Palace F.C.

By the time of Eric’s passing on 11th August 2010 he had reached the age of 86 years, been happily married for 64 of those years had three children, four grand children and one great grandchild.

Eric is sadly missed by all of his family and friends
