Betty was more than just an amazing person, she was the most amazing mum. I know it sounds easy to say but she really was my best friend. Growing up we were lucky that my mum chose to stay at home and we had many an adventure in the school holidays with her free bus pass. When I was six my mum decided to get her first guide dog and I was upset that I wouldnt be able to guide her any more and this is what helped her to decide it was a good idea. She was always determined that we would have a normal upbringing and wouldnt have to feel responsible for her getting around. This brought a golden labrador, Jane, into our lives, who was a loving, dependable, reliable dog and gave my mum a real sense of freedom. Jane retired on her 10th birthday and Odine, another golden lab came to live with us. Odine had a really lively personality and would keep my mum on her toes. I still remember seeing my mum walk up and down our street passing the house several times, all because Odine wasnt ready to come home and so refused to find our drive. She had a real cheeky streak. My mum and dad became involved with fundraising and by default so did me and my brother. Many a weekend was spent in a city centre where my job would be to man the tombola or wander between the street collectors checking if they or their dogs needed anything whilst my dad manned the stall and my mum sat for hours collecting tin in hand. It was a real family affair. My mum also travelled extensively giving talks at schools, groups and dinners. She had a real gift for it and even took part in delivering training sessions to other speakers. My mum did not return to work until both me and my brother had left home where she found a job that she loved at Green Flag. Odine was a bit of a celebrity in the Office with everyone stopping by to see her in her bed with a full size duvet and pretty pink cover (bought by the boss). Sadly just as my mum and dad were enjoying having the kids out of their hair my mum was diagnosed with cancer. The treatment was tough but it bought us an extra 13 months which we cherished. One of my favourite memories from that time was my 21st birthday where we spent the night in a castle and had a medieval banquet. The whole family together. Sadly 2 weeks after this on 31 May 2005, my mum passed away quite suddenly. I can honestly say there isnt a day goes by when I dont think about her in some way and I still get the urge to call her even now. She truly was the best mum I could have had.
